The drug, which is made by Pfizer, was originally approved by the FDA in 1998 for the treatment of erectile dysfunction. However, generic versions of the drug, known as sildenafil, were approved in 2003 for treating pulmonary arterial hypertension, or high blood pressure in the lungs.
Viagra is the active ingredient in Cialis, the company said. It is available in a dosage of 50 milligrams (mg) per day, while the pills are sold as 100 mg.
Pfizer also said it is working with its patients and healthcare providers to provide more information on the drug and how to use it safely.
